Guide to Caring for Latex Clothing
Latex clothing is delicate and requires special care to maintain its appearance and durability. Follow these steps to clean, store, and maintain your latex garments properly.
By following these steps, you can keep your latex clothing looking sleek and extending its lifespan. Regular maintenance is key to preserving this delicate material!
1. Cleaning Latex Clothing
Latex is not machine washable and requires gentle handwashing.
After Each Wear:
-
Prepare a Cleaning Solution:
-
Fill a sink or basin with lukewarm water.
-
Add a small amount of mild soap (dish soap or a latex-specific cleaner). Avoid harsh detergents or products with oils.
-
-
Wash Gently:
-
Immerse the garment in the water.
-
Gently rub the surface with your hands to remove sweat, body oils, or residue.
-
Pay attention to areas with the most contact, such as underarms or the inside of gloves.
-
-
Rinse Thoroughly:
-
Drain the soapy water.
-
Rinse the latex thoroughly with cool, clean water to remove any soap residue.
-
-
Pre Shine:
-
Shine the latex with a wash-in shiner such as Vivishine Perfect Latex Shine.
-
Ensure the latex is fully coated before drying to make sure it does not adhere to itself in storage.
-
2. Drying Latex Clothing
Improper drying may damage latex.
-
Shake Off Excess Water:
-
Gently shake the garment to remove as much water as possible.
-
-
Pat Dry:
-
Lay the latex on a soft, absorbent towel.
-
Pat the surface dry with another towel.
-
Hang on a non metal hanger
-
-
Air Dry:
-
Leave the garment to air dry completely in a cool, shaded area.
-
Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources, as these can degrade the latex.
-
Direct a fan at the drying latex to speed up the process
-
3. Polishing and Shining
Latex naturally has a matte finish but can be polished for a shiny appearance.
-
Apply Latex Shine Product:
-
Use a silicone-based latex polish (avoid oil-based products, which degrade latex).
-
Apply a small amount to the garment and spread evenly with a micro fiber cloth.
-
-
Buff to Shine:
-
Buff the latex gently using circular motions to achieve a high-gloss finish.
-
4. Storing Latex Clothing
Proper storage prevents damage and discoloration.
-
Powder the Inside:
-
Lightly dust the inside of the garment with talcum powder or a latex-safe dressing aid. This prevents sticking and makes the garment easier to put on.
-
Skip this step if you applied a wash-in shine.
-
-
Fold Carefully:
-
Fold the garment neatly to avoid creases.
-
-
Use a Garment Bag:
-
Store in plastic bags.
-
Keep latex away from direct sunlight, fluorescent lighting, and heat.
-
Store garments separate and label bags for easier future use.
-
-
Avoid Contact with Metals and Oils:
-
Keep latex away from metal hangers, jewelry, or anything containing oils or grease, which can cause staining or degradation.
-
Latex that includes hardware should be stored separate.
-
5. Repairs and Maintenance
Handle small damages promptly.
-
Patch Tears:
-
Use latex adhesive and a patch to repair small tears.
-
Follow the adhesive manufacturer's instructions for best results.
-
-
Check Seams:
-
Inspect seams regularly and apply latex adhesive if needed to reinforce weak spots.
-
6. Wear Tips
Protect latex during use to prolong its life.
-
Use Dressing Aids:
-
Apply a silicone-based lubricant or talcum powder to your skin or the garment for easier dressing.
-
-
Avoid Sharp Objects:
-
Keep nails, jewelry, and other sharp objects away to prevent punctures.
-
-
Minimize Prolonged Wear:
-
Latex doesn’t breathe, so avoid wearing it for extended periods to prevent excessive sweat buildup.
